Materials: One clear jar full of M and Ms. One index card for each student (prepare by writing a supportive or defensive behavior on the back of the card.) One copy of the County Poject handout per student.
Hook: Pass out one index card per student. Use activity outlined in M and M Activity under documents.
Lesson: Explain the different types of groups and the characteristics of a group. See the Group Types and Characteritics power point in the the documents. For each group type give examples.
Discuss group norms and roles. See the Working in Groups power point in the documents.
Guided Practice:
Divide students into groups of 5-6. Working together, the students will create their own country. See the country project handout in the documents. Students will fill out a preporatory worksheet to plan basic concepts of their country, including the name of the country, visual aid ideas, and group member assignments (see page two of the handout). Each presentation must also include the elements listed on page three of the handout.
Independent Practice:
Closure: What role did you take on in your group project? Do you feel like your group communicated effectively? Why or why not?
