The Texas Speech Communication Association invites submissions of scholarly posters, papers and panel presentations by undergraduate and graduate students for its 2025 annual convention.
We invite project submissions from Communication Studies and allied disciplines such as Public Relations, Mass Communication, Performance Studies, etc. grounded in qualitative, quantitative, rhetorical, and other methodologies. We especially welcome papers or projects that connect to the 2025 conference theme, Navigating Our Complexity.
We encourage submissions that feature student-faculty scholarly collaboration as well as individual student paper submissions, submissions to the student extended abstract/poster session, and submissions to the TSCA Excellence in Oratory panels. We view this conference as an opportunity for students to gain experience in submitting to and presenting at conference. The conference experience is a chance for students to polish their work for potential future publication.
This conference is committed to focusing on the following submission types:
Submitted papers must include the following:
Document 1 (Title Page): Name, student level (graduate student or undergraduate student), School affiliation, email and phone number of primary/corresponding author, a paper title, an abstract, and keywords for the paper. Title page must include a declaration of whether it is a faculty-student collaboration or a student-only paper.
Document 2: The manuscript, which does not exceed 25 pages (excluding abstract, references, tables, charts, and appendices), double-spaced, follows APA style (1-inch margins on all sides, Times New Roman), and has author identifying information removed from the manuscript.
Both submitted documents must be Word documents.
Paper submissions will undergo a blind review process. All accepted student-only papers submitted will be considered for the Top Student Paper Award. The Top Student Paper will be awarded a cash prize and be included in the upcoming Texas Speech Communication Journal (with further editing, guidance, and final approval of editor and reviewers).
Submitted panels must include the following:
All of the following should be included in one Word document. (1) a title for the panel, (2) a one-page rationale justifying the significance of the proposed panel, (3) a brief (75-word) description for the conference program, which includes the panel type: paper, class project, poster panel, etc. (4) a list of all participants including names, affiliations and contact information (e-mail and phone number), (5) a declaration of whether it is a faculty-student collaboration panel or student-only panel, and (6) a faculty level chair for the panel, including their name, school affiliation, and email and phone number.
Proposed panels can include, but are not limited to, papers, class projects, poster panels, etc.
* Panels which include participants from the same institution are acceptable
Submissions to the extended abstract/poster session must include:
Document 1: (Title Page): Name, student level (graduate student or undergraduate student), School affiliation, email and phone number of primary/corresponding author, project title, and keywords for the project.
Document 2: (Extended Abstract): The summary should be 400-700 words and contain a short introduction, a description of the methods as appropriate, evidence used, preliminary findings, and a brief conclusion. We welcome projects of all methodologies as well as works in progress for the extended abstract/poster session.
Both submitted documents must be Word documents.
If chosen for a poster presentation, the poster must be readable from five feet away, and it should clearly display paper title, author(s), and affiliations. If your paper is chosen for a poster session, at least one of the authors must attend the conference and be present to discuss the poster. This submission type is limited to graduate or undergraduate students. All extended abstract/poster submissions will undergo a blind review process.
All 4-7 minute student speeches delivered in a collegiate freshman-or-sophomore-level public speaking course are eligible to be submitted for consideration to the TSCA Excellence in Oratory panel(s). Submissions must include:
One document: Name, speech title, school affiliation, email and phone number of student speaker, one sentence description of the speech, and a viewable YouTube link to the speech (video can be set to "unlisted" visibility rather than publicly searchable), assignment instructions/prompt for the speech from the course (should detail genre, rubric, and scope of the speech assignment).
Must be submitted in a Word document.
If your speech is chosen for inclusion, the student must attend the conference and be available to deliver their speech.
Projects: Whether a case study, applied research project, campaign, film, or applied, digital, or performance project, the project length must conform to one of the following stipulations:
Document 1: (Title Page): Name, student level (graduate student or undergraduate student), School affiliation, email and phone number of primary/corresponding author, project title, and description of type of project.
Document 2: The author(s) will submit a written project in Word document or prepare a written description of the project and provide sample screen shots of the project in an uploadable file. In other words, applied projects may need to be condensed for reviewing purposes. The exception to this would be film projects which may be submitted with a YouTube link. Any film/video/audio or recorded performance projects submitted should not exceed 10 minutes in length. Please note that PowerPoint presentations are not acceptable as digital projects, or as a mechanism for submitting other projects.
TSCA upholds the following National Communication Association’s Professional Standards for Convention Participants
